Genevieve C. Rodgers

Genevieve Curry Rodgers, 97, of the Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople, formerly of Patricia Drive, Ellwood City, died early Saturday morning, June 6, 2009 at the Passavant Home.

She was born in Punxsutawney, PA on April 7, 1912 to the late Frank H. Curry and the late Edith M. Smith Curry. She attended grade school and her first two years of high school in Punxsutawney and graduated from Lincoln High School in Ellwood City in the class of 1929, later graduated from Slippery Rock University, and attended night and summer school at Geneva College. She taught school in Perry Township for three years beginning in 1931 and then in Hartman Elementary School for 32 years beginning in 1934.

Genevieve was an active member of Bell Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1927 and was a member of the King’s Daughters Sunday School Class, the Leona Lash Guild, taught Sunday School, and served on the Board of Christian Education and Youth Activities. She served the church in many capacities through the years.

She was a life member of the Ellwood City Hospital Auxiliary, spending many hours doing volunteer work. She was a member of the local Business & Professional Women’s Club, Wimodausis, a charter member of the local AARP chapter, as well as state and national chapters, a member of the local and state Retired Teacher’s Organization and the Slippery University Alumni Association.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold O. Rodgers, whom she married July 21, 1947 and who died September 25, 1987. She was also preceded by a sister, June Curry Smail; a brother, Dr. Robert C. Curry; and two nephews, Duane S. Workman and Robert P. Curry.

She is survived by nieces and nephews: David S. Smail, Brookville, PA; Cathy Gira, South Carolina; Mary Beth Barnhart, New Jersey; and William, James, John, and Gerald Workman, all of the Castlewood area.

Friends will be received from 6-8 P.M. on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 and from 10-11 A.M. on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Services will be conducted on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at TURNER’S with Rev. Derek Longbrake, pastor of Bell Memorial Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Entombment will be at the Slippery Rock Cemetery Mausoleum, Wayne Township.
